sleeping beauty

My sweet little girl had a rough night last night.  It really started Friday when she got hit in the nose by a rock while playing out back.  The neighbor boy threw it and hit her smack between the eyes.  It's bruised and scratched but she recovered quickly from the hit.  Praise the Lord we have great neighbors here - right next door we have a NICU pediatric nurse & paramedic.  I asked them to look at her nose and they said just to watch her for a concussion... basically see if she looses conscientiousness or starts vomiting then get her to the ER.

Like I said, she basically just shrugged it off, no symptoms appeared and we went about our weekend... until last night when we got home from church... she started vomiting (a lot) and we couldn't rule out if this was related to the rock or just a virus that she picked up.  Our neighbors were such a blessing to us again and encouraged us to get her in to the ER, just in case.  So we asked another neighbor to stay with the boys (who were now in bed) and Steve and I took her to the ER.

At that point she was vomiting about every 10 minutes... not fun... did you know bile smells like stinky fish??  YUK!!  At the ER they did a CT scan and her brain was completely fine!  Praise God!!  They were looking for any skull fractures or any bleeding and thankfully they found none.  So, they started trying to tackle vomiting... basically she's got the stomach flu.  They gave her an anti-nausea medicine which works well for chemo patients and she slowly started to slow down her vomiting.

Unfortunately, they still got concerned about dehydration and wanted to get an IV in her to get more anti-nausea med in her and make sure she was good and hydrated before we went home.  I say unfortunately because the IV didn't work... or should I say the RN's couldn't get the IV started in her tiny sunken veins.  They tried 3 times and couldn't get it in.  The poor little thing... I was balling with her and just wanted them to stop.

She was begging for water.  We asked if maybe she could have something even if she was going to throw it up it would at least comfort her.  They obliged and she kept it down... and even asked to go potty.  That was the tipping point... she had to go potty and that meant she wasn't as dehydrated as they suspected.  So, at 3:00 AM they gave us discharge papers and instructions on what to do if she continued to get worse.

Praise the Lord - she hasn't vomited since about 2:00 AM this morning!!  She's kept everything down and has had close to 16 more ounces of 'pink drink' aka sports drink that Daddy drinks (our kids name things by color!).  I just snapped the above picture... she is sound asleep on the couch downstairs in the sunshine!  She's been watching TV all morning and has dozed off, which is great.  She needs her rest!  And so do Daddy & I... but we will have to sleep in shifts.   Oh well, I'm glad this looks to be behind us now and we know that the rock really didn't cause much damage... just swelling and bruising which will heal soon.

Please continue to pray for my little girl... and the rest of us... I'm certainly NOT wanting a virus like what Karlie has to go through the rest of us!!  And that's the rest of the story.... :)

Oh Nik!
I am so sorry to hear about all that! Sick kids are not fun but even more so when you end up at the ER!

What is it with nurses who cant get IVs in? It took 3 to get one in me when I had Carter's amnio...come on. I know kids can be hard but really - as if puking wasn't bad enough lets poke her a dozen times too! I wonder sometimes.

I will be praying that y'all stay healthy.

Rest well, my friend!

LYMYTTYS!

So glad you have a nurse and paramedic next door--that sure came in handy! We will be praying for you, and that you stay healthy. Deidre and I are JUST getting over the cold that Bill brought home 3 weeks ago (and I think I cracked another rib from a coughing spell Saturday night) OW. Love you!
